Living a Life of Victory Through the Word

“But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness.”

1 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV)

An encounter with an aunt during a visit to her home jarred my thinking. I was assisting with some household chores when she said, “I do not sweep out my blessings.” Aunty is a believer and loves the Lord dearly, but where did that come from?

As believers, we know that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, paid the ultimate sacrifice for our redemption so that we may walk in victory through His Word. According to John 1:1, there is no distinction between the Word and Jesus; they are One.

However, there is an enormous difference between what we profess and how we apply the Word of God in our daily lives. We can become trapped by the traditions and beliefs of our ancestors, which prevent us from walking in total victory in Christ. The Word admonishes us in Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV) to “…lay aside every weight and sin which so easily ensnares us…”. These refer to the weight of thoughts and beliefs that keep us from walking fully in the Spirit.

The Bible also tells us in Hebrew 4:12 (NKJV), “For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” If we consistently feed our souls with the Word of God and allow it to be our guide:

  •  Then, every thought or action that does not line up with the Word will become nullified when the Holy Spirit nudges us.
  • Our hearts would be so saturated with the Word of God that it would flow freely from our lips since “…out of the abundance of the heart [our] mouth speaks”Luke 6:45 (NKJV).

Prayer

Father God, I ask that You touch the hearts of the individuals reading this message and help them cultivate a daily habit of reading Your word so that they may hide it in their hearts and not sin against You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
