How God Calls People to Discipleship

“Jesus called  out to them, “Come be my disciples, and I will show you how to fish for people”

Matthew 4:19 (NLT)

Jesus said, ‘Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.’ Not only is this a call that Jesus makes to Peter and Andrew, but also to each one of us.

Jesus told Peter and Andrew to leave their fishing business and begin fishing for “people,” i.e., guiding others to find God. Jesus was calling them away from their daily production trade to be productive spiritually, the trade that lasts for eternity.

We all need to fish for souls. If we practice Christ’s teachings and share the Good News with others, we will be able to draw those around us to Christ like a fisherman who pulls fish with nets into his boat. It’s a direct call to become instruments to bring others to faith in Christ; this is often seen as a model for the call to discipleship for all believers (Matthew 28:19-20).

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus continues to be with us today through His spirit.

If we refuse to serve the King faithfully, we are disloyal subjects, fit only to be banished from the Kingdom. We must make Jesus the King of our lives, worship Him as our  Saviour, King, and Lord, and share Him with others.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You have called us through Your Son, Jesus Christ, to make disciples of all nations. We ask for Your guidance. Grant us opportunities to share Your love, courage to speak Your truth, and faithfulness to nurture Your flock in Jesus’ name, Amen.
