His Love Transcends All Things

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

When we think of our earthly fathers, most of us will feel that rush of love, that warmth of wonderful memories, and the pride which comes from knowing that we are their children. As we reflect some more, the memory of an event or incident when we had to be corrected or disciplined by him will creep in unnoticed. If we learnt anything from that event, we should be able to feel gratitude flooding our hearts for our father.

Two of the most endearing qualities of fathers are their ability to understand that children will make mistakes and their ability to discipline in love. For some earthly fathers, this may prove challenging, but not so for our Heavenly Father, God. His love and discipline are so closely knitted together that they are almost inseparable.

2 Kings 6-7 is a perfect example of this. The children of Israel had sinned, so God permitted Ben-Hadad, King of Syria, to besiege Samaria. As a result, there was a famine in the land. It was so severe that two women decided to eat their own children. When the King of Israel heard of it, he sent for the prophet Elisha, meaning to kill him since Elisha had foretold the famine. Elisha prophesied that, according to the Word of the Lord, the famine would end the following day, but the king and those around him doubted; but God kept His Word.

The next day, God caused the Syrians to flee, believing they heard the sounds of a great army attacking them. They left their camp, leaving much food, clothing, livestock, and valuables. Four leprous men, who were seated as outcasts at the gates of Samaria, were chosen by God to relay the good news to the Israelites. Their heavenly Father had seen the Israelites’ plight, forgiven them, and provided for their needs in a move of transcending love.

Beloved, as we live each day, let us purpose not to sin against our heavenly Father. If we do, let us quickly repent so that His love will protect us and provide for us. 1 Peter 4:8 tells us that love covers a multitude of sins.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, it is a privilege to call upon You, knowing You are our Father and our Lord. Thank You for Your love, which provides, protects, guides, and corrects us. Please, Father, help us to be more committed to You and to know that when You discipline us, it is for Your glory and for our good. Amen.
