‘I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.’”
Psalm 122:1 (NIV)
In His perfect wisdom, God created every living thing and placed it in a specific environment to live, thrive, and fulfill His purpose. Just like a tree needs good soil and sunlight to grow, we, too, need the right spiritual environment to grow in faith. As God’s special creation, we must be intentional about where we should be strengthened, encouraged, and continually drawn closer to Him.
The Psalmist declares in Psalm 122:1 that he rejoiced at the opportunity to be in the house of the Lord. This joy reflects the understanding that when we are in God’s presence, surrounded by fellow believers, worship, and the Word, we are in a place where spiritual growth flourishes. The church, our faith community, and our quiet time with God are all parts of this “habitat” where our faith can be nurtured.
Spiritual growth is not meant to happen in isolation. Proverbs 27:17 (NIV) says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Our relationships with others in the faith are vital for growth. God uses people – mentors, friends, fellow believers – to challenge us, encourage us, and walk with us in accountability and love. This mutual sharpening builds our character, strengthens our walk, and draws us deeper into Christ.
David beautifully expresses his longing for this continual communion with God in Psalm 27:4 (NIV) “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.” As believers, we should seek the same: to dwell with God, to enjoy His presence daily, and to grow in understanding and devotion.
Let us not settle for spiritual stagnation. Let us pursue environments – both physical and relational – that promote spiritual maturity. In doing so, we honour God and become better equipped to share His love with others.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, lead me to the places where You want me to grow – whether in quiet moments with You or in fellowship with others. Plant me in Your presence, and surround me with those who will help sharpen my faith. Grant me wisdom and boldness to share Your truth and love with those I meet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
