What is Faith?

“…Peter answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night and have taken nothing; nevertheless, at Thy word I will let down the net.” Luke 5:5 (KJV)

This moment marked a significant step in Peter’s faith journey. Although he and the others had worked through the night and caught nothing, he chose to act on Jesus’ word. That is faith. It is the decision to trust and obey even when the situation seems unchangeable.

Faith is not about what we see with our eyes. It is about what we believe based on who God is. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Faith often begins when sight ends. When we have nothing left to go on but the Word of God, that is when true faith is tested and strengthened.

Jesus is described as the author and finisher of our faith – Hebrews 12:2. As the author, He initiates the process. As the finisher, He brings it to completion. Our faith is not sustained by our efforts alone. It is sustained by our relationship with Him. He creates the environment for our faith to grow. He allows challenges not to break us but to mature us. That is why Jesus taught that those who worship God must worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Fellowship with God fuels faith. Without it, our faith will remain shallow. With it, our faith will flourish.

Faith may seem unrealistic or foolish to others. But those who trust in God know that He moves in the realm of the impossible. Obedience to His Word invites breakthrough, even when the odds are stacked against us.

Testimony

My faith did not grow overnight. It developed in stages. I remember how God helped me with the small things I asked for. Those answers gave me the confidence to believe Him for more. As life progressed, I faced situations that no amount of money or planning could fix. I was forced to believe in Him for things that seemed far beyond my reach. Colloquially, ‘I wanted to hang my hat where my hand could not reach.’ But I still believed. I chose to trust that God, Who came through before, would do it again. And He did. He showed up just in time. He did not allow those who doubted me to rejoice over me. Each of those moments became a pillar in my faith journey.

Today, I can say with confidence that I serve a mighty God, a faithful God Who has never failed me.

My faith is not based on theory. It is based on experience. And each time He shows up, I believe Him even more. This is how my faith grows. One testimony at a time.
