The Potter!

“But now, o Lord, You are our Father…our potter; And…we are the work of Your hand.”

Isaiah 64:8 (NKJV)

It is amazing to know that we are the work of God’s hands. He is our creator. He thoughtfully and carefully crafted us. His work didn’t just end at creating us; he continues to mould and shape us all through our lives. This is remarkable.

Imagine a big clump of clay; that clay can become a beautiful and purposeful piece of art in the hands of a potter. That is exactly how our lives are in the hands of God. Watching a potter create a vase or any decorative piece or sculpture can be therapeutic and gives emotional resonance of connection and feelings.

Remember, the potter started with a plain, formless chunk of clay but slowly worked it. This clay does not take any shape immediately. It takes more than a few steps to build it up to the right viscosity, weight, shape, and size. It is interesting to observe since there is a lot of stretching, compressing, pulling, and pushing. In the end, there is a lovely, beautiful finished product, but the process took a lot of changing and working to produce the final shape.

Now, as we picture the potter and the clay, that is what our life is like. God is the potter; we are the clay. He has the vision and the expertise to mould us into the perfect form of what we are to become in Him! We must trust Him to shape us through every step of our lives. Like the chunk of clay, we must endure the changes, the stretching, the pulling, and the pushing. There will be times when there is a need to remove excess clay, a need to chip away at our rough edges; however, in the end, we are the product of God’s handiwork. And what a fine work of art we are in His very own hands. The very connection to Him is embedded in us.

God wants to mold us into the image He desires for us – His own! Let’s become mouldable in our Father’s hands.

Prayer

God, we praise You. Forgive our resistance to Your work and help us to trust You as You mould and shape our lives. Help us to embrace the growth that will come with Your stretching, pushing, and pulling to form us into who You’ve created us to be. We thank You and trust Your plan for each one of us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
