Parents of the Bible – Part 1

“The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his father’s early years…”  2 Chronicles 17:3 (NLT)

The attributes and duties of each parent in the Bible help us to live better lives. As we read and meditate on each parent’s accomplishments and example, we strive to live a life that is pleasing to God. Moreover, the Word of God instructs us how to relate to our own children, our families, the children of our neighbours, those in the community, and the world over.

Proverbs 1:8 (NIV) says, “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Verse 10 continues, “My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.” Children should be taught to “…obey their parents in the Lord, for this is right.” (Ephesians 6:1). One of the benefits of obeying our parents is that things may go well with you as children, and you can live long and be prosperous.

So, parents should:

  1. Teach children to pray and obey God’s Word, including reading It daily.
  2. Teach children to be disciplined (Proverbs 29:17)
  3. Instruct children to obey God’s Commandments. The Commandments are designed to direct us in our duty, both towards God and towards man. (Proverbs 3:1-8)
  4. Teach their male child not to spend time on women, those who ruin kings (Proverbs 31:3)
  5. Teach their children to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9)
  6. Model practical examples so that children can see and do likewise.
  7. Encourage children to acquire a good education. 2 Timothy 2:15 encourages us to do our best to present ourselves as approved workers.
  8. Model giving, especially ‘tithes and offerings.’ (Malachi 3:10)

Parents must have a parental influence on their child’s early years so as to make an impact in their later years. King David influenced his son to walk in the ways of God in his early years. (2 Chronicles 17:3). What about you, father?
