“…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…” – Mathew 28:20 (NIV)
The art of imitation is critical in life, as it relates to humility and following good examples.
Let’s think about learning a new skill, for example, cooking. Many of us did not begin as experts. I for sure had no idea how to begin. I learned from watching, practicing, and accepting correction – whether from a parent, an elder, or looking at YouTube tutorials.
Friends, growth will come from admitting that we did not know everything and allowing ourselves to be taught. Moreover, we are commanded in 1st Corinthians 11:1 (NIV), to “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (Paul speaking to the church in Corinth).
Believers who are rooted should have an intimate, personal relationship with the Lord and radically submit to Him. The more we learn about our Saviour, the more knowledge we will have to develop a heart posture like His and reflect His character more clearly. Thereby, leading to more humaneness in the world.
God calls us in Mathew 28:19-20 to go forth and make disciples of all nations. But we cannot lead others where we ourselves have not gone. Before we make disciples, we must be willing to live as disciples, which means being surrendered to and shaped by our Saviour.
To do this,
- We must spend more time with Jesus.
- Develop patience in dealing with difficult people and those intending us harm.
- Allow the Scripture or the Holy Spirit to correct deeply held ungodly attitudes or habits.
The art of imitation is not weakness; it is wisdom. It is in surrendering our ways that we make room for God’s work within us. When we choose to be shaped, corrected, and led by Him, we do not lose ourselves – we become who we were always meant to be in Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to be Your disciple. Teach me the art of imitation and to surrender my pride, my plans, and my desire for control. I want to be like you, Lord Jesus. Give me a humble and teachable heart, willing to accept correction. Help me to sit with You, learn from You, and reflect Your love in all I do. Make my life a witness to Your glory. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.
