We spend so much energy trying to satisfy our lives with physical security, career success, and even temporary comforts. Yet, physical bread only keeps the body going; it cannot feed the spirit.
We hear these words, but are we truly listening?
God’s Word and presence are the true sustenance that fills the deeper hunger inside us, yet we often tune out His voice in favour of the world’s noise. This translates to Not Listening!
Scripture says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, NKJV).
It is easy to feel the weight of our failure, but do we listen when God calls us to honest reflection and repentance? This verse levels the ground for all humanity: none of us are perfect, and none of us can bridge the gap to God’s holiness on our own. We need Jesus.
Acknowledging this isn’t meant to demotivate us – if we are willing to hear the truth, it is meant to show us that we all share the same need for help. “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…” Isaiah 64:6 (NIV) says.
When we try to earn God’s favour or prove our worth by our own efforts, we reveal how reluctant we are to listen to His message of grace. Our highest achievements cannot cleanse our hearts. True freedom comes when we stop trying to save ourselves, discard our pride, and actually listen to the offer of His righteousness given freely to us.
So, quiet your mind and listen to the voice of God.
Prayer
Lord, open my heart and my ears. I acknowledge that I cannot sustain myself on worldly things alone, yet I so often tune out Your voice. I confess that I fall short, and that my own efforts to be “good enough” will never be sufficient. Help me to stop relying on my own strength and to truly listen to what You are saying to my soul. Forgive my shortcomings, quiet the noise in and around me, and fill the empty places in my heart with Your truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
