“The Lord God has opened my ear; and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away.” – Isaiah 50:5 (NKJV)
Listening is vital to our spiritual and relational skills. It has to do with wisdom, humility, and obedience.
God longs to truly communicate with us. He wants us to listen to what He has to say. Isaiah 50:5 speaks about adhering to God’s leading and not becoming rebellious. This points to a prophetic reference of Jesus Christ, His obedience, His suffering, and His trust, in John 9:4 (NKJV), where He said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me…” He obeyed.
As disciples, we are to hear as the learned, to listen to God, and obediently follow His instructions. The question is, “Are you truly listening to Him?”
Listening to God is more than just hearing His word. It’s about cultivating a deep and meaningful relationship with Him. This requires intentional time, attentive listening, and a heart willing to respond to His leading. When we listen to God, it deepens our trust in Him and opens the way for spiritual growth. As we sit at His feet daily and listen, we are empowered to make wise decisions, and our faith is transformed into a vibrant personal relationship with Him.
Psalm 25:9 (NIV) tells us, “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.” The onus is therefore on us to remain open, receptive, and willing to accept correction, thereby creating space for God’s wisdom to shape and direct our lives in this world.
Moreover, once we acknowledge the presence of the Holy Ghost as our counselor, pray and study His Word, He will help us to discern God’s guidance and direction for our lives. God’s voice will always align with His Word.
As we seek to listen to God’s voice, allow Him to open our ears so that we will hear clearly. Let us pay attention and overcome the hindrances that will prevent us from listening. These include:
- Noise and distractions that will drown out God’s voice. Intentionally create moments of stillness by setting aside uninterrupted time to focus on Him. Psalm 62 (ESV) reminds us, “For God alone…my soul wait in silence…”
- Seasons of doubt and dryness. Remember God’s presence is constant, even in silence. Remain steadfast in prayer and faith.
- Neglecting time with God. Let us make God our priority.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, I come humbly before You. You said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice…” Let me hear Your voice, Lord. Open my ears and help me to listen and respond to Your sweet voice every day, in Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen!
