Opportunities

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Psalm 90:12  (KJV)

Life is valuable. Each day provides brand new opportunities for us to seize: an opportunity to buy land, an opportunity to build a house, an opportunity to start a business, an opportunity to study, and the list can go on. Some are seen as the opportunity of a lifetime! But have you ever paused to realise that we are also afforded opportunities in our families?

Each day is a gift from God and is riddled with opportunities for us to express love to the members of our family, but many times, we take these opportunities for granted. We allow resentment, ridicule, pride, hurt, malice, jealousy, envy, selfishness, strife, anger, bitterness, busyness, and the like to snuff the joys out of good family life.

The prayer of the psalmist in Psalm 90:12 is of profound simplicity. Like the psalmist, we too need to be taught to number our days! Numbering our days causes us to understand that we will not live forever, that our time on earth is limited. Should we then waste this time? Should this time be spent bickering and biting?

Our family is precious, and family life can be joyous, but we must apply our hearts unto wisdom! Wisdom demands that we seize every opportunity to show love to each member of our family. We can show love by quickly settling differences, giving a warm embrace, saying “I love you”, looking out for and protecting each other. We can also demonstrate our love by presenting thoughtful gifts and making time for each other. If we’re too busy for family, then we really are too busy!

It is the Lord God Almighty who affords us every opportunity. Don’t waste it! Let’s seize it!

Prayer:

Dear Lord, teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Please repair and strengthen our family relations. Give us a heart of love for each other and help us to express and demonstrate our love, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
