A Spiritual Legacy

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served … But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

  Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)

Joshua had made up his mind. Knowing he was responsible to give an account of his life, he decided to serve the Lord.  In addition, as head of his household, he had set himself the task of leading and influencing his family to do the same.

David said, “I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart” (Psalm 101:2).  The word perfect does not mean that David considered himself sinless; rather, it means that he was determined to be mature.  He desired to grow up in God.

I sometimes talk to people who envy the godly heritage of others – a spiritual legacy or heritage they themselves do not have.  They seem to think that those born into Christian homes have had a somewhat unfair advantage.  Don’t let other people’s blessings petrify or anger you – start a godly heritage of your own.  Let it begin with you.  Say, as Joshua said, “as for me and my house (family), we will serve the Lord”.

Joshua’s vibrant faith helped an entire nation to follow the True and Living God.  The best possible thing we can do is to be sold out to God – first at home.  Joshua made loving God with all his heart a daily habit.  His lifelong obedience set him and his family apart. Many people chose the Lord that day – simply because of Joshua’s testimony.  Be encouraged to leave your spiritual legacy today, even if those nearest to you, even a husband/wife or a child, do not believe at this moment.

PRAYER:

Lord, I thank You that my faith in You is real and sincere. I thank You that You help me to express my love for You daily, especially in my home. Help me to be an example to my family.  Thank You that they can see Your faithfulness and presence in my life – my spiritual legacy. I pray You show me new ways to display Your love to those around me, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
