It’s Yours, Claim It – Part 2

“Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” – John 8:36 (HCSB)

While we are aware that generational curses can be passed along in families via things seen, heard, and experienced, we equally have the assurance that once we walk in obedience and do His will, the blessings of God will manifest in our lives. But how do we get to this stage of God’s blessings being manifested in our lives despite generations of broken homes, barrenness, poverty, unmarried family members, unnatural deaths, hypertension, and the myriad of issues plaguing families?  In my own family, due to unfortunate circumstances, our dear mother was never married and so my five siblings and I share four different fathers.

Now you can imagine that this would be a very troubling issue for all of us – the thought foremost in our minds as we matured was whether the same thing would happen to us. Our mother was a good woman with a good heart, but we learned that her mother (our grandmother) also was unmarried. You may be reading this and you’ve also recognised, after looking back at your family history, that your own family is headed in a similar direction. BUT – thanks be to God for His grace and the constant reassurances in His Word, my siblings and I did much better in this area.

Ezekiel 18:19 (ESV) states when the question is asked, “…When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live”.  In other words, we are not bound to follow/repeat things done by those who have gone before us. We can break free from generational curses by first understanding who we are, knowing the will of God concerning our lives, and walking in obedience to His Word. Next, we should identify those things/situations that have plagued our families and petition God, reminding Him of His own words concerning such; and then with the help of the Holy Spirit, live exemplary lives that can be emulated by our offspring and other family members.

While sometimes we may not be aware of the reasons for the past experiences of family members, we are sure of God’s will concerning our lives, according to Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV). Claim your future, it’s not one of evil.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for the reassurances in Your Word concerning generational issues in our families, help us to actively lay claim to all these promises, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
