The key feature of a curse is the observable perpetual repetition of negative patterns in the life of an individual.
There are different kinds and causes of curses. Deuteronomy Chapter 28 has a good listing of blessings and curses. In some families, generational curses manifest in the following examples:
- Parents divorced and all their children and grandchildren divorced in their marriages
- Males in a family across various generations spend time in prison.
- No one in the family finishes school or remains employed for a long period.
- Everyone is addicted to some illicit substance.
Generational curses are also known as family bondage; family curse; ancestral curses or negative family cycles. It refers to the collective negative effect on a person(s) as a result of sinful things their ancestors practiced, believed in, or did in the past.
Sadly, too often family members may unknowingly manifest a generational curse and then learn from someone who’s familiar with the family, “Oh, the same thing happened to your mom/dad/uncle/aunt.” Moreover, it’s a type of curse that comes through the bloodline and therefore it must be broken through blood.
To break and overcome generational curses we need:
- The Blood of Jesus.
- To Repent – a renewed mindset: Repenting of the sins of mother’s and father’s household.
- Pursuit of generational blessings.
What to expect when breaking generational curses?
There are two key experiences to expect when breaking generational curses:
- There may be fluctuating support from and resistance from family and loved ones – specifically those who continue in the curse.
- You may resist the changes required to break generational curses. It is going against ‘your nature’, i.e., your learnt behaviour. Thus, significant effort is needed to overcome and develop a new nature.
What’s the number one generational curse?
One may say that the first and number one generational curse occurred in the Garden of Eden when man disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned —” Rom 5:12 NIV.
How to break the number one Generational Curse?
Accept the free gift of eternal life by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).
The devil may try various tactics to keep you under the oppression of a generational curse. Employ the guidance of James 4:7 and the devil will be defeated:
Curses are not to be endured…curses are to be broken! Shalom.
