The Second Most Important Relationship

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24 (KJV)

The Genesis mandate concerning marriage is being challenged in so many ways in the world in which we live today. There are so many different worldviews influencing the minds of mankind. For many it is okay to develop a relationship with another human being, in some cases, it is not with the opposite sex, and thereafter cohabit without any serious commitments, and many times they do not even think about the consequences of the decisions they make because instant gratification of the flesh is a priority in their lives.

Genesis 2:24 speaks clearly to a one flesh covenant relationship whereby a male man should come together with a woman (born female with a womb) and the two should unite (covenant) in the sight of God and man and live together thereafter in peace and harmony and be fruitful (produce offspring after their kind). With this in mind; we all must turn on the searchlight and evaluate the current relationships we have with ‘the one we love’. Upon self-examination, if we conclude that we are in step with what the Bible says then we can rejoice because obedience brings blessings (Deuteronomy 30:9-10). Further, we must continue to watch and pray in order to grow in our relationship with each other and with Christ (Mark 14:38).

On the other hand, if our current relationship is not in keeping with God’s Word, we have the opportunity today to make it right by separating ourselves from wrongdoing (whatever is in direct opposition to biblical principles) and begin to move in the direction of first accepting Jesus into our lives and then allowing the Holy Spirit to sanctify our entire being. Whenever you have to make this second most important decision of who you are going to spend the rest of your life with, choose wisely and allow the Word of God to be the greatest influence in your life.
