God Recognises the Lowly – Part 1

“For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant” – Luke 1:48 (NKJV)

Over the years there are some activities that are associated with the celebration of the first coming of Jesus to the earth. One that has always captured my attention is showing love and compassion for the poor and powerless, as depicted throughout the Manual for Living (the Bible) that I meditate upon.

Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 2:8 (NKJV) records, “He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes,..”. Mary, hundreds of years later sang in Luke 1:52, “He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly.”. These words were uttered by women who were in tune with God, and they understood His heart. Mary was a peasant girl from a small village. History of life at that time reveals that her lifestyle was one where expensive clothing was not worn. She would be considered as being poor.

The humble beginnings of the life of Jesus speak volumes to us about how God desires to relate to humans from all walks of life. Many times we tend to turn a blind eye to those in need and focus on those from whom we can get returns materially. But here are two reminders, “Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy;…Free them from the hand of the wicked.” – Psalm 82:3-4 (NKJV). “The rich and poor have this in common, The Lord is the maker of them all.” – Proverbs 22:2. This season, remember the value of the needy and be a blessing to someone. Place Christ at the centre of all that you do.

Prayer

Dear God, today we yearn to be like Christ. We pray that godliness with contentment will be our lifestyle. That as we look to You and live for You, we would reach out to people from all strata of society. Lord help us to see Christ in every man and woman. Help us to realise that we are who we are because of Your mercy and grace. Give us hearts that will be open enough to allow You to come in and dwell, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
