Jesus: The Gift

“For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be calledWonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)

As we contemplate the gifts we’ll share and collect during this season, whether they are from family or friends, romance Isaiah 9:6. This particular Scripture is used a lot during the celebration of the advent. But do we really understand it? A Son is given, whose Son? God’s Son. He is the most amazing, majestic, and awesome gift we could receive today or on any other day. Our Heavenly Father believes we deserve this Perfect gift.

Let’s examine His characteristics:

  • Wonderful – the Hebrew word ‘pala’ brings out exactly who He is, “a phenomenon lying outside the realm of human explanation, and comprehension.” There are not enough words to express the wonder of His name.
  • Counsellor – In Him can be found counsel for any and every situation we encounter. He is the Living Word and according to 1 Corinthians 1:30, became for us wisdom from God – and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.
  • Mighty God – means El Gibbor. The Hebrew word gibbor means strong, mighty, brave, and courage. Daily we encounter both spiritual and physical battles, He is the One Who fights our battles – 2 Chronicles 20:15 (NKJV)
  • Everlasting Father – In His very name, He would never leave us nor forsake us. This bold and profound promise was given and is fulfilled in Him. He is unlike some of our earthly fathers who have left and/or are planning to leave. Hebrews 13:8 states He is The God of our past, present, and future – unchanging, Eternal God.
  • Prince of Peace – the Hebrew word ‘Sar Shalom’ means the One who removes all peace-disturbing factors from our lives and secures peace. We sometimes fail to trust Him as situations occur but Philippians 4:6 -7 reminds us that He will be our peace.

The gifts we’ll receive will someday rot, corrode or even break. But Jesus Christ, The Gift, is unbreakable and unchangeable. He became flesh for us, to deliver us from sin.

Revelation 3:20 (NKJV) says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Invite Him in today, and accept this Gift. It is time.

Prayer

Dear Lord, You’re the most wonderful gift that I could have during this season. I choose You, forgive me of my sins, and come into my heart, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
