The Holy Spirit’s Function

The Holy Spirit’s Function

John 14:26 (KJV)

“…the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things…” John 14:26 (KJV)

The Holy Spirit will help us tremendously as our Teacher if we allow Him to fulfill this role in our lives. Obedience to Christ is impossible for anyone relying on his or her own strength, and sadly, many Christians often try to live their life by depending on themselves instead of recognising their need for God.

The Book of Acts clearly demonstrates this. Those preaching the Good News, though ordinary people with human frailties and limitations, were empowered by the Holy Spirit to preach it all over the world. By reading the Bible, we can sit with the resurrected Christ in His discipleship school. By believing in Him, we can receive His power through the Holy Spirit to be new people. His kingdom would remain in the hearts of all believers through the presence of the Holy Spirit.

After Christ ascended into heaven, He could be spiritually present everywhere through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit was sent so that God would be with and within His followers. His Spirit would comfort, teach, discern truth, remind us of Jesus’ words, give us the right words to say, and fill us with power. Thus, the reason for Jesus’ ascension.

In Acts 2:1-4, we read how the Holy Spirit was made available to Jesus’ disciples. You also can receive the Holy Spirit once you receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour and be water baptised. The baptism of the Holy Spirit must be understood in the light of His total work in Christians.

  1. The Spirit marks the beginning of the Christian experience.
  2. We cannot be joined to Christ without the Holy Spirit.
  3. The Spirit is the power of our new lives.
  4. The Holy Spirit works in us to help us become like Christ.
  5. The Spirit unites the Christian community in Christ.
  6. The Holy Spirit can be experienced by all, and He works through all.

Constant study and practice of God’s Word is a sure way to hear the Holy Spirit clearly. Remember what Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” If we do not study His Word, how can we make the right decision and know that we are hearing His voice? So, study His Word and listen to His Spirit.
