“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct” – 1 Peter 1:15 (NKJV)
A call to holiness is a call to separate ourselves from sin, to consecrate ourselves to God, and to allow His character to shape our thoughts and actions.
Believers are called to live holy and to be examples to those who do not know Christ. Paul, the apostle, in his writings to the Ephesians, encouraged them “…to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” (Ephesians 4:1 – NIV). Thus, answering the call to be holy would involve being mindful of:
- Things that we do, i.e. how honest and trustworthy we are with people, and things entrusted to us, what choices and decisions we make, and how these affect others.
- Places we visit and the reasons for doing so. When we walk in the Spirit, we are guided by the Holy Spirit’s direction, being conscious of His presence and our own motives, and desiring always to do what pleases Him (Galatians 5:16).
- People with whom we associate regularly. 2nd Corinthians 6:14,17 (NIV) says, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers…Come out from among them and be separate…”. It may not be practical to be surrounded by believers all the time. However, when in the presence of unbelievers, we need to demonstrate gentleness, kindness, wisdom, and a sense of calm. In other words, the fruit of the Spirit must be evident in our everyday lives.
Following the call to “Walk in the Spirit” means choosing to love people, even the difficult ones, and being respectful to them. This involves refusing to hold grudges and choosing to forgive, even when we do not think someone deserves forgiveness. It means staying connected to God through prayer and praise, and quietly making your requests known to Him. It means recognising and responding to the Spirit’s nudges to refrain from speaking or acting even when we think we are right. It means asking for forgiveness when we do wrong or disobey. It means loving the Lord with all our hearts.
Brethren, let us respond to this call of Holy Living. Let this be our heartfelt desire – to walk in the Spirit.
