“…Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit…she will bring forth a Son, and…He will save His people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:20-21 (NKJV)
When Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together, “she was found with child of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18). Joseph, her husband, did not want to make her a public example, so he was going to put her away secretly (abandon her).
An angel of the Lord later appeared unto him in a dream and told him to “fear not”. This was the Lord’s command to Joseph, which encouraged him. He learnt that what Mary was carrying in her was divine, so he was obedient and did not put her away.
This entire account is a source of encouragement for us today to pattern Joseph’s actions. He showed kindness and compassion for Mary even though it must have been a difficult situation in which he found himself. The community could have ridiculed him, but he chose to have courage in the situation. Similarly, we must choose to show kindness and compassion to each other and not condemn.
Jesus Himself said He didn’t come to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved (John 3:17). This was done out of pure love for us. So, in this festive season, let us show love for each other.
Prayer
Father, we thank You for Your love, and even now, we pray that You help us do as You commanded and show love to each other. Thank You for Your son, Jesus. Continue to do good work in us through Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
