Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.” – Psalm 91:3
A pestilence is a contagious or infectious epidemic disease that is devastating and often fatal. Spiritual pestilences are those behaviours that, sad to say, we allow to creep into the church and kill the natural love and unity with which we are called to serve.
Pestilences do not respect a person’s position in life and society. Once acceptance of loose morals become a part of us, such as, dressing immodestly, accepting coarse language, and general lawlessness, the pestilences of satan begin to torment our souls, convincing us we have no place in the body of Christ. Paul says in Romans 1:32, some believers not only do the same but have pleasure in them that practice same. Beloved, it is time that we clean up our act by repenting, and prosper, even as we desire our souls to prosper.
Pests and pestilences are also a hindrance to growth. They cause trouble, annoyance, and discomfort, imposing themselves where they’re not wanted. Spiritual pests are the same, such as persons who call us with a false concern to pray for a brother or a sister, when in actuality they just want to gossip. Avoid them. We need to get the spiritual pesticide of spiritual discernment and the boldness to set that person on a path of deliverance, whether they are related to us or not.
Friends, for us to remain in good health as God desires, we need to avoid the spiritual pestilences that can hinder our growth and destroy us altogether. Psalm 145:19 (NIV) tells us, “He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; He hears their cry and saves them. You can cry out to Him today for your health.
