Abiding in Christ – Part 1

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in Me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5 (NLT)

The heart of discipleship is a profound, passionate love for God that can transform everything in life. It goes far beyond simply obeying rules or attending church services and conferences. It is a holistic journey of learning about Jesus, loving Him deeply, and living out His teachings in our everyday moments.

Jesus joined love and discipleship together. The definition of love is bound in Him. The clearest place where He joined love and discipleship is His own command: “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:35 (NKJV). Thus, love is not optional but the evidence of discipleship.

One question some people around the world are asking is: Can we live out Jesus’ teachings amid global confusion and chaos? Yes, we can. By abiding in Him every moment of the journey, we will receive instruction and inspiration to live successful lives.

At its core, discipleship is becoming like Christ through a continuous personal relationship with Him. It is love expressed through obedience. We demonstrate abiding in Christ when we display His love. Love is an attitude that reveals itself in action. How can we love others as Jesus loves us? By:

  1. Helping when it is not convenient
  2. Giving when it hurts
  3. Devoting energy to others’ welfare, rather than our own.

This kind of love is hard to do. This is why people notice when you do it and know that you are empowered by a supernatural source. 1st Corinthians 13 has another beautiful description of love.

Discipline alone doesn’t make you a disciple; devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ does. Do not focus on what you have to forsake; just follow Christ. Following Him gives you strength, direction, and power.
