Beyond Your Comfort Zone

“…Throw your net on the right side…” – John 21:6 (NIV)

We celebrated the resurrection power of Jesus (Easter) not so long ago, fasted and prayed, yet many of us have returned to our daily routine or comfort zone and feel powerless to navigate the daily struggles. Today, God wants us to move beyond our comfort zone to fully experience the resurrection power of Jesus daily.

Our comfort zone is where we feel safe or at ease. It is also described as “a settled method of working that requires little effort and yields only barely acceptable results.” Barely acceptable results? Isn’t that what happened to the disciples of Jesus in John 21?

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples by the Sea of Galilee. The disciples had been fishing all night but had caught nothing. At dawn, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognise Him at first. He called out to them, asking if they had any fish. When they replied that they had none, Jesus instructed them:

“…Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21:6 – NIV).

Beware of the risk in the routine, as shown by the disciples’ return to their ‘comfort zone’ of fishing, yet they caught nothing. Remember, however, that the One who brought the resurrection power is able to fill our nets on the ‘right side’.

We have an opportunity today to use the resurrection power to change some habits or implement actions to grow spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially, academically, or professionally.

There is a management tool that necessitates moving from your ‘comfort zone’ by pushing past your ‘fear zone’ to arrive at your ‘growth zone’ where purpose is fulfilled. Commander Naaman was skeptical before dipping in the Jordan River to receive his healing (2 Kings 5:1-14). Joshua and the Israelites also had to use an unconventional strategy given by God to bring down the walls of Jericho (Joshua 6:1-20).

Today, remember that the resurrection power is not an annual celebration but a daily companion that helps us move beyond our comfort zones.
