“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4 (ESV)
Parenting can mean many things to different people. Some say it is a tremendous responsibility and a blessing; others say it is challenging but fulfilling; yet others say it is difficult in this 21st-century world.
From a biblical perspective, parenting is the God-given role of nurturing, instructing, disciplining, and loving children in a way that honours God and prepares them to walk in His ways. Children should not be seen as possessions, interruptions, mistakes, or responsibilities, but as God’s precious gifts, entrusted to our care for a season. It is less about control and more about cultivation and entails the following:
- Modelling Christ in our daily actions (Ephesians 5:1) – Children learn more from example than from instruction. Our walk with God profoundly influences our children’s lives. When they see us being kind or showing love to others, it is easy for them to replicate.
- Correcting in love, not in anger (Ephesians 6:4) – Discipline should not be administered out of rage, but guided by love. Disciplining out of anger can push a child away or worsen the situation.
- Teaching God’s Word consistently and joyfully (Proverbs 22:6) – Parents are spiritual teachers. We are called to lead by example and integrate faith into our children’s daily lives. We can teach them to pray God’s Word in faith, knowing that He will hear and answer.
- Loving unconditionally, even in challenging times (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) – As parents, our love should reflect the heart of God – faithful, forgiving, and full of grace. We should not turn our backs on our children; there should always be space for forgiveness and behaviour change.
Biblical parenting, then, is a lifelong commitment that requires lots of love, patience, sacrifice, and the ability to adjust. Perfection is not a requirement; parents must be present, intentional, and responsive to their children’s unique needs.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for the gift of children. Help us to see parenting as a sacred duty and not just a routine. Give us wisdom to model Christ, correct in love, and teach Your Word to our children, even when it is difficult. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
