“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity…a time to weep…a time to laugh, a time to mourn…a time to dance” – Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 (NIV)
God, in His infinite wisdom, created seasons not only in nature but also in our lives. One of the most beautiful and often overlooked seasons is the time to celebrate. From the beginning of creation, God has shown that celebration is part of His divine plan for mankind. In Genesis, after six days of creation, God rested on the seventh. He blessed it and declared it holy (Genesis 2:2-3). This was not only about rest but also about pausing to appreciate and celebrate the goodness of creation. This was the first celebration recorded in history, and it came directly from God Himself!
Jesus our loving Saviour, also participated in celebrations here on earth. His first recorded miracle occurred at a wedding celebration in Cana, where He turned water into wine to keep the celebration going (John 2:1-11). This act demonstrated His love for our happiness, our moments of joy, and His wanting to be part of such moments.
Celebration, then, is not something invented by us humans, it came from God. He designed us to celebrate milestones, victories, and His constant provision in our lives. Celebration reminds us of His goodness and keeps us rooted in gratitude. When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, Moses and Miriam led the people in a song of praise and thanksgiving (Exodus 15). When the prodigal son returned home, his father threw a grand feast to rejoice in his son’s return (Luke 15:22-24). These accounts reflect God’s heart – He delights when we embrace joy and celebrate His work in our lives.
Celebration, however, is not merely about external festivities. True celebration begins with a heart that recognises and acknowledges God’s hand in all things. It’s an act of worship. Whether in times of personal victories, family milestones, or even the quiet joy of daily blessings, celebration turns our focus away from what’s lacking and toward the abundance of God’s grace and mercy.
Prayer
Father God, we thank You for being our great example. We pray that You, by the power of the Holy Spirit, help us find moments to pause and celebrate Your goodness to us, especially when it seems like we are about to be overwhelmed. Today, we choose to celebrate all that You have done and will continue to do in our lives. Amen.
