“…Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” – Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)
In a world filled with challenges and trials, it can be easy to forget the importance of celebrating. A few things readily come to mind for those of us who reside in Guyana – the constant increase in loss of lives due to road accidents, fires, and domestic violence. We have all been directly affected in some way or another by either one or all of the foregoing.
In November 2023, I lost a biological sister as a result of a road accident. Even if we have not experienced such an occurrence, as tough as it may seem, we must understand that God’s plan for mankind involves both seasons of trials and seasons of joy. As believers, we are called to live in the joy of the Lord, which is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10).
To the non-Christian, finding joy in times of adversity may seem very strange, but let us remember what Philippians 4:4 (NIV) says: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” This command is not conditional or dependent on the prevailing circumstances, but it is, rather, an invitation to anchor our joy in the unchanging character of God. The question may be asked, why celebrate while passing through adversity, or how could you celebrate while going through such a tough situation? In my case, my sister was laid to rest three days before my birthday. Did I celebrate? Oh yes, even though I was grieving, I found time to acknowledge the goodness of God in my life thus far! Paul and Silas, in Acts 16, were beaten and imprisoned, but they still sang hymns of praise to God. Their joy was grounded in their knowledge that God was with them even in that dark dungeon!
Today, I want to encourage you to take a moment and celebrate God in the midst of whatever challenging or difficult situation you’re going through. Write down three things you are grateful for, then sing a song of praise or share your testimony with someone. Your celebration may be just what that person needs at that moment to encourage their faith.
Celebration in difficult times is not about denying the reality of pain or suffering but affirming the reality of God’s presence, power, and promises. Most importantly, though, be reminded that the ultimate celebration awaits us in eternity, where we will be united with Christ and partake in the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9).
Prayer
Dear God, I thank You for teaching us to celebrate even in the midst of our struggles. You are truly our refuge, strength, and help in all circumstances. I pray that our celebration will be a testimony of Your goodness to those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
