“For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders…” Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
It is Christmas time again, and the shopping frenzy has started. This is the period when most companies that provide goods and services make super profits, as people all around the world get themselves indebted to banks and other loan agencies to make an impression. This impression has nothing to do with celebrating the birth of our Saviour King, Jesus Christ. Houses are alight with fairy lights, but the occupants of some of the homes’ hearts are not filled with the light of Christ.
Emphasis is on Santa Claus, the elves, toys, foods, parties with secular music, and such – it’s showtime, a time to dress and impress. Expensive attire is bought to wear at signature events with the aim of securing a competitive edge among the wealthy in our society. Some churches have also joined the secular fray by having discos mass. Secular singers belt out provocative lyrics while there is an emphasis on the fleshly things – chocolates, sweets, liquors, etc. In such a setting, there is no heart change.
In this festive season, we should ensure the chamber halls of our hearts are filled with brotherly love, forgiveness, and laughter rather than with despair, unforgiveness, and sadness. Yes, beloved, it’s show time for some, but it should be a time of joy for all. The Word in 1st John 3:8 (NKJV) declared, “…For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Friends, those of us who are born-again Christians, let us not join the world by having a pagan view of Christmas and being entrapped in activities that have nothing to do with the commemoration and celebration of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us remember that Jesus is the reason for the season and use the opportunity to evangelise our friends and family members for the Lord Jesus Christ.
