David, The Young King

“…Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” – 1 Timothy 4:12 (NLT)

David’s life from an early age showcased an astute leader. He was very competent, courageous, committed, and full of faith in the God of Israel (Jehovah). He trusted and had great faith in his God, which led to his confidence as he engaged in challenges. He knew his God was with him and would help him overcome any trouble in his life.

As the shepherd boy looking after his father’s flock, he had to defend and protect them when attacked by lions and bears. God helped him to defeat them. Though Jessie (his father) nor Samuel did not see the leader and warrior in him, God saw it. Thus, his anointing as the next king of Israel.

Like David, some of our young people are gifted with many talents, but those around sometimes do not see them, including parents, teachers, and friends, leading to them being deterred from going after a particular career. Some are told they are not good enough or don’t have the look or stature, much less the brain, to gain such a job. But, be encouraged, trust in the Lord, and He will surely direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6)

David was also very courageous, and his strong relationship with God allowed him to be fearless. He was no soldier and had no training or knowledge about combat, yet he took on the challenge of fighting Goliath, a giant. What could have made him so bold and courageous compared to the seasoned soldiers who were running scared at Goliath’s simple bellowing as he challenged them to fight him?

It was his faith in his God, Who promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6), that same God who had previously delivered him (1 Samuel 17:34-37). That God is available to you today, as well. Just as David successfully defeated the giant with God’s help, you also can overcome your naysayers by God’s grace.

How strong is your faith in God? Do you firmly believe that He is able to see you through any trial or obstacle in life? If your answer is yes, then you are in good company, for King David trusted and believed in God with his whole heart.

Parents, teachers, and friends endeavour to spot and encourage those within your sphere to continually seek God as they aspire to fulfill their God-given purpose in life. Do not diminish them, for it is only by truly knowing Him that they can establish who they are and why they were created.
