“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 2:5 (NIV)
Plants need soil to survive, mostly because it provides resources such as nutrients, water retention, microorganisms, and more. So if the plant is in bad soil, it wouldn’t thrive. The plant is still itself, but without the right soil to help it thrive, it can’t properly survive.
In the same way, our attitude helps us thrive. Not necessarily because it’s a demand of our human nature, but more because it helps to shape how we live, lead, and represent Christ. Paul urges believers to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2), reminding us that attitude is the soil from which our actions grow.
I asked myself: “How would Jesus’ attitude reflect in His relationships?” I think He would:
- Forgive others without expectations. On the cross, Jesus prayed, “…Father, forgive them…” (Luke 23:34). Releasing the pain and bitterness we may hold on to allows our attitudes not to be burdened by weights we shouldn’t be holding on to.
- Serve others in leadership. Jesus washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:12-15), and He reflects that true leadership is stewardship. When we adopt a humble servant mindset, our perspective shifts from self-centeredness to Christ-centeredness.
- Have humility. Philippians 2:5-8 describes how Jesus made Himself nothing and humbled Himself unto obedience. Having humility aligns us with Christ’s servant heart, without seeking recognition. Just like how Jesus humbled Himself even to the cross, we can show humility in our relationships.
Question: Is your soil nourishing your life, or breaking it down?
Prayer
Father, You are Alpha and the Omega. I humbly come before You, asking You to come into me and cleanse my heart. Come in and live in my heart, so that my thoughts, behaviour, and attitude shall all reflect You. I ask, Father, that You help me to adopt a spirit of service in my relationships, friendships, and every aspect of my life. Help me to reflect Your love, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
