Don’t Give Up; Give Over

“But when she could hide him no longer…she placed the child…among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.” – Exodus 2:3 (NIV)

Have you ever felt like throwing your hands in the air in despair? Well, I encourage you to throw your hands up to God and cry for help. Stretch them out and say, “Take over, God.”

I love the example of Jochebed, Moses’ mother. She was faced with a situation over which she had no control. Pharoah had made a decree that all male babies two years and under were to be thrown into the Nile River (Exodus 1:22). Her son was part of that group. As a result of Jochebed’s relationship with God, she moved in faith and hid Moses until “…she could hide him no longer…”. She had expended her natural efforts and prepared to give it all to God. She agreed to partner with God to form an unbeatable force. God used her skills and familiarity with her immediate environment and gave her a plan that staggers the minds of men, even today.

Moses, who had purpose written all over him, was about to be rescued by the most unlikely person – a miraculous intervention. Jochebed’s faith and obedience helped preserve the life of her son. She knew of the possibilities that were available to her family, and she made full use of them. After she placed her son in the basket and placed him in the river, Pharoah’s daughter arrived to have a bath. She saw the basket and inspected it through one of her maidens. God’s plan continued as Miriam, Moses’ elder sister, emerged from the position that her mother asked her to take and indicated she knew a nurse for the baby, Moses’s mother. Amazing God! Moses was nursed with natural milk and the Word of God by his own mother and educated in Pharoah’s palace despite his decree.

What can we learn from this account? We may have situations where a child or a relative may not be in a safe place as it relates to his/her life. They may be in danger of being destroyed by the enemy. DO NOT SURRENDER TO THE ENEMY. Give it over to Jesus. He is always present. Call on Him and admit that you can’t do it alone; you need help. When you can’t hide any longer, ask the God of love, mercy, and compassion to help you. Use God’s whole armour liberally, especially the parts that are for your hands. Don’t give up!
