Earnest Prayer

“Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for Him to act…” – Psalm 37:7 (NLT)

Believers, when you pray, expect to hear from God and wait for an answer.

I will be honest. Sometimes, I would pray and then say God knows my heart’s desire; I do not need to keep praying about the same issue. However, when we pray, it should be a posture we take earnestly as we wait to hear from Him. In waiting to hear from God, you will learn His voice. John 10:27 (NIV) says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” God’s voice is a whisper (1 Kings 19:11-13).

Have you ever prayed earnestly for something, waited, and waited, and still no answer? Has your soul become bitter as you wait for the Lord to answer? We forget that our God is sovereign and His plans for our lives are perfect (Psalm 84:11). He has not forgotten you. In 1 Samuel 1, Hannah’s infertility brought severe disgrace to her as a woman because, in those days, it meant she could not fulfill her familial purpose of producing offspring. For years, she poured out her soul’s desire to the Lord in prayer but received no response. However, when she prayed in “deep anguish…weeping bitterly” (verse 10), i.e., ‘in earnest, pouring her soul out’ to the Lord, He granted her petition.

What are you seeking God for today? Have you stopped praying, stopped petitioning God to act on your behalf? Remember 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV), which says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Continue to pray, expecting God’s will for your life to be fulfilled, and commit your plans to His capable hands. Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that God can do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to our faith. What a Word! Ask God to grant you the desire to pray and spend time with Him. He can do more than you imagine.

As you pray and seek God today, remember He is sovereign and all-knowing. You may think you have prayed and waited for so long, but beloved, God’s timing is perfect. As you wait, be encouraged, knowing our GOD is more than able. Continue to seek and cultivate that relationship with Him (Yahweh). He is gracious and merciful in every season of life.

Charles Spurgeon said, “If you believe in prayer at all, expect God to hear you. If you do not expect, you will not have. God will not hear you unless you believe He will hear you; but if you believe He will, He will be as good as your faith.”
