“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned…” – Isaiah 43:2 (NKJV)
When I think of thanksgiving and gratitude, I remember David, the man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22).
I went to the account in 2 Samuel 6:1-19 and began to search for the answer to the manner of dancing displayed by David. The Philistines were enemies of the children of Israel. Before David became king of Israel, there was a fierce battle between the armies of these countries. The enemy took away the ark of the covenant, which represented the presence of God to the Israelites. David’s first task when he became king of Israel was to persevere until it was returned to the city of Jerusalem.
The journey was not without challenges, but the ark eventually was returned to Jerusalem. David danced before the Lord on this journey, and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark with shouts and rejoicing. King David’s reaction upon successfully returning the ark should help us to understand its importance and what it meant to the people of God.
When do we rejoice like David? Is it when we celebrate an achievement, acquire a family possession after much prayer, or finally receive a promotion? David missed the ark that represented God’s presence so much that he rejoiced when it was returned to its rightful place.
He went on to confess: “Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” – Psalm 139:7-10 (NKJV).
The Word of God speaks volumes. David’s enthusiasm should inspire us to endeavour to live in God’s presence where benefits also accrue, including perfect peace, protection, guidance, eternal security, faith, rest, refreshing, joy, and direction. In fact, God can be whatever you desire Him to be in your life once you are in His presence and are enjoying a relationship with Him. There’s a life-giving connection.
Do not keep God on a shelf until trouble comes, but make a joyful noise unto Him. Come before His Presence with singing. Be thankful unto Him, and bless His Holy Name.
Prayer
God, I’m truly thankful for Your presence. It gives me calm assurance that I can call on You anytime and anywhere. Help me to serve in humility, with integrity and gladness of heart. As I interact with others, may I remember to express gratitude to anyone who offers assistance in any form. Help me to be humble at all times. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
