Entrusted by God: Lessons from the Parents of Samson – Part 2

“The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him.” – Judges 13:24 (NIV)

Friends, there’s a safe blueprint for what we must do in this life regarding our children: seek God’s guidance for what He entrusts to you. This can be found in Judges 13:8-14. A father-to-be prayed to the Lord for instructions on how to raise the son he was promised. Verse 12 records his request to the angel of God, “…Manoah asked him, “When your words are fulfilled, what is to be the rule that governs the boy’s life and work?” (NIV). The angel reiterated the instructions he had already given to Manoah’s wife (Judges 13:1-5).

Manoah didn’t just rejoice in the promise when his wife returned with the good news from the angel of God – he prayed for instructions. He knew that receiving a calling wasn’t enough; he needed divine direction to carry it out. Parenting, leadership, or ministry without God’s guidance is like trying to sail without a compass.

Parents, guardians, and anyone with the slightest responsibility for little ones should seek God’s face on how to raise these precious souls. Manaoh’s posture is encouraging; he went before God seeking advice on how to raise this special boy correctly. Your children are special; they all have a special assignment in their lives. Seek the Lord’s face to raise them according to His plan and purpose.

When God gives you a responsibility, ask Him how to fulfill it. Don’t assume you know best – seek His Word, His Spirit, and godly counsel. In every facet of your life, you need the grace of God and His divine direction.

As we reflect on Samson’s parents, we see that they accepted the call, sought divine direction, and, with humility, stayed with the process.

Prayer

Lord, You have placed people, responsibilities, and callings in my care. Show me how to handle them, Your way. Give me wisdom, humility, and clarity as I lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
