Evangelism – Part 1

1 Peter 3: 1 (Amplified Bible)

In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands, not as inferior, but out of respect for the responsibilities entrusted to husbands and their accountability to God, so that even if some do not obey the Word of God, they may be won over to Christ without discussion by the godly lives of their wives –

Often when we think of evangelism, we think of sharing the Gospel with a neighbour, a workmate, or even someone on the street. The person we set out to win for the Lord is seldom a spouse even though we earnestly desire to see that spouse fervently serving the Lord. According to this text, husbands can be converted or won over and can experience the love of the Lord through the conduct of their wives. How often do we as wives miss the opportunity to be a witness for Christ in our own homes and to our spouses? The Scripture states further that wives should not be preoccupied with expensive external adornment but instead must develop the imperishable quality and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, “one that is calm and self-controlled, not over-anxious, but serene and spiritually mature..” (Verse 4).

We are unaware or sometimes ignore the fact that our spouses are closer to us than anyone else on earth. They understand our behaviours and motives and are looking for these qualities to convince them that we are genuinely focused on developing and maintaining a true commitment to faithful living. 1Timothy 2:10 speaks of the women being “adorned by good deeds…” Even in this fast-paced age with many women holding executive positions, wives who are believers must make every effort to influence their unsaved spouses for the Lord through a conscious daily demonstration of respect, honour, and high esteem.

Recently, we witnessed the conclusion of a three-night conference on Evangelism hosted by the Youth Department of the Assemblies of God in Guyana. The theme, Each One Win One, mandates us to win at least one person for Christ. Why not make that one your unsaved spouse? Time is running out.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please make me a witness for You wherever I go, especially in my home and to my spouse. Help me to demonstrate a Christ-like lifestyle that would persuade him to give his life to Your service, in Jesus’s name. Amen.
