Fasting in Action

The Greek word for fasting is nesteia — a compound of ne (a negative prefix) and esthio which means “to eat.” So the basic root meaning of the word simply means “not to eat.” Fasting is abstaining or partially abstaining from food for a designated period of time as an act of discipline and worship unto God. It is important to note that fasting must be accompanied by diligent prayer and studying of the scriptures, otherwise, abstinence from food is simply dieting.

Whenever we decide to fast, Isaiah 58 should be used as a guide for our general conduct and attitude during this period. As we examine this chapter it points clearly to the fact that as individuals, in addition to our personal and spiritual responsibilities abstaining from food, Prayer, and Bible Study are compulsory necessities. We also have social responsibilities to our neighbors, communities, and the nation. We must see and take note of what is happening around us and we must never add to the oppression and contention that already exist, but rather be conduits of change (verse 3).

As we approach our Heavenly Father Isaiah 58:6 encourages us that fasting should be done to break the chains of wickedness, untie ropes and set the oppressed free. This is applicable to both the individual and the community/nation. This is our spiritual responsibility. Additionally, we must fulfill our social responsibility during the fast by sharing our bread with the hungry and being hospitable and compassionate to the poor and homeless (verse 7).

After we would have been obedient and ministered unto others the Lord will minister unto our needs in every area of our lives (verses 8-14). The righteousness of God will be seen in us and we will be able to effect change in society. Today let us ask the Lord to help us to be obedient and act in accordance with His will, and to open our eyes so that we can see what is happening around us. Let us commit to being agents of change.
