“Flavourless salt is good for neither the soil nor the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!” – Luke 14:35 (NLT)
“You are the salt of the earth…” Matthew 5:13 is a popular portion of Scripture we know by heart and can recite without thinking.
As salt, it is expected of us to be good for seasoning, adding flavour (Luke 14:34). Science also shows that salt has healing and preserving properties. Since we are the salt of the earth, it is expected of us to take the salt properties wherever we go, in the highways and byways, at home, school, work, or play.
The moment we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we are bestowed with the properties of salt. Too often, though, we have ignored our salty influence, choosing instead to maintain the status quo or what seems the easiest course. Too many times, we have chosen to become flavourless salt.
Luke 14:35 tells us that flavourless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. How much more useless can one be if one is not fit for soil or for manure! This is a call to repentance. The Lord Jesus Christ never intended for us to be useless. Many times, however, we have sinfully taken on a nonchalant approach. Matters that should capture our attention for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ just pass us by. Lord, forgive us.
My dear fellow salt, let us humble ourselves in repentance before God for allowing ourselves to become flavourless. May the Lord God Almighty restore our flavour as we influence every sphere of this world for Him. We are the salt of the earth.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You are God and in charge. We humble ourselves in repentance before You for allowing our influence as salt to be lost. Please forgive us, wash us in the blood of Jesus, and restore in us the salty influence You have always intended. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
