“…Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word…”
Luke 1:38 (NKJV)
Mary, a young woman from Nazareth, received an earth-shattering message from the angel Gabriel: she would bear the Son of God (Luke 1:26-35). With no roadmap and no full understanding of the magnitude of her calling, she simply responds with obedience and surrender: “…Let it be to me according to your word…” (Luke 1:38).
This moment marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith. Mary carried more than a child — she carried God’s promise to the world. She endured misunderstanding, hardship, and uncertainty (Matthew 1:18-20). Yet she held on to God’s word, pondering each sign and treasuring each moment, even when she didn’t fully comprehend His plan (Luke 2:19).
Mary was there at Jesus’ first miracle, gently nudging Him forward at Cana (John 2:1-11). She was there at His profound teachings, quietly trusting (Mark 3:31-35). And she was there at the foot of the cross, watching the Son she once cradled now crucified between thieves (John 19:25-27).
It is generally accepted that children should bury their parents and not parents their children. A question was once asked, “Can a mother’s tender care cease towards the child she bears?”. Yes, Mary, the mother of our Saviour Jesus Christ, soul was pierced, just as Simeon prophesied (Luke 2:34-35). Yet, she did not run. She stood firm. Her faith did not waver.
Mary’s journey reminds us that God’s call often leads us through glorious highs and painful lows. The promise may bring joy and also deep sorrow. But in every season, faithfulness means staying close to Jesus — from the promise, through the process, even to the cross.
Reflection
Are you in a season where God’s promises seem hard to carry? Like Mary, may we respond with trust. May we treasure the things we do not yet understand (Luke 2:51). And may we remain at His feet — even when it hurts — knowing that God’s purposes are always fulfilled in His time.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Mary’s example, whose faith stood firm from the promise to the cross. Help me to trust You when the path is unclear. Give me grace to walk with You in obedience and courage, holding tightly to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
