Gleaning Wisdom

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” – Proverbs 1:5 (NIV)

There is a beautiful invitation hidden in this simple verse: the invitation to become a lifelong learner in the school of God. Today’s Scripture reminds us that wisdom is not found in pride, noise, or busyness, but in a heart that is willing to listen. The truly wise are not those who speak the most, but those who hear with humility, discernment, and faith. Such can only be achieved, brothers and sisters, when we enter into the presence of Jesus, through the teachings of His Word.

Yes, we all desire wisdom, not the wisdom of this world, but the wisdom God desires for us when we sit in His presence. Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV) declares, “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” The question, therefore, is, “What is wisdom?” Joyce Meyers, in her teaching of the subject, said, “Wisdom is not just knowing. It’s the application of knowledge.”

To “hear” in Scripture means more than just listening with our ears. It means opening our hearts to God, receiving His truth, and allowing that truth to shape our lives.“Sanctify them by the truth; your Word is truth.” (John 17:17 – NIV). Wisdom grows when we are teachable. It deepens when we pause, reflect, and sit quietly before the Lord. In His presence, we listened, learned, and received life-giving truth through the Word of God. To sit at Jesus’ feet is to take the posture of a humble disciple. It is to say, “Lord, I need Your wisdom more than my own understanding.” It is in this sacred place that our hearts are formed, our minds are renewed, and our paths are made clear.

When we sit in His presence, we “increase in learning,” as Psalm 119:130 (NIV) declares: “The unfolding of your words gives light;  it gives understanding to the simple.”  The Holy Spirit gives us guidance, direction, and discernment for daily living. Yes, we are taught not only how to navigate the pitfalls, snares, and traps set for us by satan, but also how to live a victorious life each day as we surrender and submit to the Lord Jesus Christ. Today, let us create space to be still before Jesus- to listen, to learn, and to be transformed. True wisdom begins in sitting, not in speaking, in hearing, not in rushing, but in resting in His presence.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach us to sit at Your feet with humble hearts. Help us to listen before we speak, to learn before we lead, and to trust Your guidance above our own understanding. Fill us with Your wisdom, and shape us into faithful disciples who walk in Your truth. Amen.
