Grow in Grace and Knowledge

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation –

1 Peter 2:2

New-born babies are totally dependent on someone to take care of them. If they are neglected they can become ill and die. In like manner, the caregiver must ensure that they maintain good physical and mental health to be fit and proper for the assignment. Similarly, when we first receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, as ‘babies’ in Christ we depend heavily on mature brothers and sisters to guide us in our Christian walk. Sometimes we call them at any time of the day or night for prayer, to explain a passage of Scripture, and for guidance as it relates to the issues of life, just to mention a few examples.

After a while with diligent care, love and attention, babies eventually grow and become stronger and stronger and are able to become independent. This process of growth brings much joy to everyone. Similarly, as Christians, we should always do what is necessary to mature in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. Instead of always depending on others to pray for us, we must approach the throne of God in prayer with confidence knowing that God will hear and answer (1 John 5:14). We must read and study the Word of God and ask the Holy Spirit to give us insight and revelation (2 Timothy 2:15), and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit to deal with and overcome challenges and obstacles that may arise.

I am not saying that by any means we should become haughty and neglect counsel and prayers from our elders but spiritual growth must be evident in the life of every believer. Of course, this will not occur overnight. It is a process, and our God is able to see us through it.

So today wherever you are in your Christian walk, tell yourself that you will grow in grace and knowledge of our Saviour.
