Healthy Fear

Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord – Psalm 34:11 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, I have tried to teach them to have healthy fear, You have seen each moment; “Be courteous,” “always remember to say, ‘excuse me’, ‘please’, ‘thank you’. “Study hard; you will smile at the end”. This may be the cries of the hearts of some parents.

We know that some lessons stuck and some they had to learn the hard way. As parents, we want so much for our children. We want them to have the wisdom that keeps them from harm and blesses them all their life. But let us note that our desire begins with teaching our children how to develop respect and reverence for God.

The Word of God teaches that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” – Psalm 111:10 (NIV), and that God promises to “bless those who fear” Him (Psalm 115:13 – NIV).

Let us teach our children that reverence for God would inspire them to draw closer to Him, and God is both powerful and loving. He cares about the most intimate details of our lives. He is “..mighty to save” (Isaiah 63:1). We can remind them that God is their “sure foundation,” and He blesses them with salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. So living with respect for all that God is, is “the key to this treasure” (Isaiah 33:6).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word promise, “The fear of the Lord leads to life, And he who has it will abide in satisfaction…” – Proverbs 19:23 (NKJV). Thank You, Father, that when we come to You, we can rest assured that You are ready to help us as parents to guide and lead our children. Please give our children insight to know that reverence for You brings blessings, in the name of Jesus, Amen.
