Hear and Obey

Hear and Obey

Exodus 19:5 (KJV)

“Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine” Exodus 19:5 (KJV)

In Exodus chapters 19 and 24, we saw communication taking place between God and Moses at Mount Sinai, where God gave him the laws to serve as governing principles for the nation of Israel after they were set free from slavery in Egypt. They were on their way to the promised land, a new beginning. The laws also served as a means to distinguish the nation of Israel from the surrounding nations since God described them as “a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation”Exodus 19:6 (NKJV)

Exodus 19:5 shows us God talking to Moses about the nation of Israel obeying His voice and keeping His covenant. A covenant is a promise or agreement between two parties. The covenant mentioned here is referred to as the Mosaic Covenant, which was conditional and clearly distinguished blessings and curses based on obedience or disobedience to God’s laws – Deuteronomy 28-29

It is essential for us who are reading or listening to this devotion today to know that whatever promise or agreement God made in the Old Testament with the children of Israel under the dispensation of the law is still applicable to those of us who are children of God living in the dispensation of grace once we fulfill the biblical requirements – Romans 8:14-17 (NKJV).

Thus, the first step in obedience to biblical principles is for us to surrender our lives to Jesus Christ and accept Him as our Lord and Saviour. This will help us to be on the right side of God’s law, where we can hear His voice, agree with Him and receive the beautiful blessings He has in store for us – Isaiah 55:3 (NKJV).
