“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)
Apostle Paul admonishes us in Philippians 2:3 not to be conceited. We should not think too highly of ourselves or have excessive self-interest and self-preoccupation. This could be more literally translated as ‘empty glory.’ While the way of the world says differently, that we should focus on ourselves, God has called us to be lowly. He has called us to ‘esteem others better than ourselves.’
The word ‘esteem’ comes from the Greek word hegeomai, which means to lead or to consider. This word and its related forms referred to outstanding and resplendent leaders who were worthy to be recognised and honoured. These leaders held a noteworthy and superior position in the eyes of others, commanding people’s respect, honour, and silence when in their presence. God is looking for believers who will consider their brothers or sisters above themselves and who will esteem others highly. In doing so, a marvellous thing happens: we have a community where everyone is looked up to, and no one is looked down on.
As we let go of our selfish ambitions, conceit, and tendencies to be high-minded and self-absorbed, we will naturally have a greater concern for the interests and needs of others. Apostle Paul doesn’t tell us that it is wrong to look out for our interests but that we should not only look out for our own interests.
Our greatest example is the Lord Jesus in Philippians 2:7-8 (NKJV), which reads, “but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Jesus has left the template for us to follow.
As believers, we should feel that something is lacking in our service until the job is complete, whatever our assignment. We should not be satisfied with good intentions or a half-done job. Everything should be done as unto God. It may not be an easy task, but with the help of God, all things are possible.
