It is Mother’s and Mothering Day

“Her children rise up and call her blessed…” Proverbs 31:28 (ESV)

Proverbs 31 is our authority today as we celebrate mothers worldwide. As the fabric of society seeks out a worldview that fails to educate young women about their value as a precursor for motherhood, the Kingdom of God holds mothers in higher esteem. We can ask ourselves three questions today.

(1) How to be a mother? She is never afraid; she protects and nurtures. Her husband is esteemed because of her reputation for being creative and clothing herself with righteousness and fine linen.  Verses 21 – 24 (ESV):

She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple.

Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.

She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant.”

(2) How to honour your mother? Mothers are to be honoured with more than physical gifts. She desires to see her children and family thriving, serving God, and passing on good attitudes and practices to her grandchildren and community. Verse 28 (ESV):

“Her children rise up and call her blessed;

Her husband also, and he praises her:”

(3) How do you remember your mother? For those whose mothers have passed, we can remember her and speak of her to our generations, which are her generations. Verses 25 – 27 (ESV)

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

Today, we can pray for our mothers and mother mentors, remembering that the Lord is affirming every mother as established in verses 29 – 31 (ESV):

“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”

A blessed Mother’s Day to all mothers.
