Jesus, Our Closest Friend
Galatians 5:19-21 (NKJV)
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity…idolatry…hatred, jealousy,…envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” – Galatians 5:19-21 (NKJV)
In the world today, there is a diabolical philosophy called, “friends with benefits” where friends who hang out with each other, engage in other promiscuous activities with no strings attached. In this type of arrangement, without exclusivity, both parties are exposing themselves to more health risks and research has revealed that it almost always gets convoluted. Whether it ends with a bang or sputters, the aftermath usually isn’t worth the risk.
Comparably, friendship with Jesus has the best benefits since this relationship has both earthly and eternal fulfilments. In John 15:15 (NKJV), Jesus declares that He will no longer call us servants but friends since He has shared everything worthwhile with us. Everything that will allow us to live a life of righteousness. It, therefore, means that through our knowledge of the Lord, we become not just His disciples, but also his friends.
As friends, it is expected that we have an understanding of each other, what motivates, and what offends so that we could cater to each other’s needs. This brings about joy and peace that cannot be found in unwholesome relationships. Jesus is our closest friend, one Who would never leave us nor forsake us – Hebrews 13:5 (NIV), the ever-present help in trouble – Psalm 46:1 (NIV). This is the reason He was sent to the world, to show us how to live, how to enjoy real benefits, and how to love.
In this season of advent, those of us who do not yet know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour can receive His gift of salvation from where all miraculous earthly and eternal blessings flow. Seek to become His friend.
