Leave the Cameras Home! – Part 2

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets…” Matthew 6:2 (NIV)

This Scripture paints a vivid picture, almost as if a parade is passing by, with loud trumpets announcing the giver’s presence. It evokes imagery of spectacle and fanfare, drawing attention to one’s acts of charity. In Jesus’ time on earth, some would make their giving public to be known for their generosity, and today, while people may not literally sound trumpets to highlight their giving, they still find ways to call attention to their acts of charity.

Interestingly, there are no clear historical records of people actually using trumpets to announce their giving. What Jesus likely referred to were the gifts given during festival times, which were often preceded by the sound of trumpets. Nevertheless, the concept of giving to the needy was deeply ingrained in Jewish culture. As Barclay notes, “To give alms and to be righteous were one and the same thing.” In fact, almsgiving was seen as a way to earn merit before God and even to atone for past sins.

Jesus calls out hypocrites, those who perform acts of righteousness only for show. The term hypocrite originally referred to actors in Greek theater, but by Jesus’s time, it had come to describe those who pretend to live by moral standards while secretly living a double life. These individuals were more concerned with their public image than with true service to God.

Jesus says, Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward– (Matthew 6:2). Those who seek applause for their giving have already received all the reward they will get – the earthly recognition. There will be no heavenly reward for those whose motives are self-serving. In essence, their payment has been made in full. How much better it is to give with a pure heart, seeking only to fulfil God’s will rather than personal recognition.

May our giving and serving always align with God’s agenda rather than our own.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for Your constant love and favour. Help me to walk humbly before You, serving others with sincerity and not for personal gain. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
