“The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” – Philippians 4:9 (NKJV)
Elisha, the son of Shaphat, was a prophet in Israel. He was mentored by the prophet Elijah, who taught him the things of God. In 1 Kings 19:16, Elijah was sent to anoint Elisha as the prophet to replace him. This clearly states that he was chosen by God to serve His people. As Elijah obeyed God’s instructions (1 Kings 19:19), we see Elisha recognising God’s call and immediately following Elijah.
As he followed his master, he observed the power of God at work and desired that power but in a greater measure. As Elijah asked him in 2 Kings 2:9 what he would want him to do for him, he right then asked for a double portion of God’s Spirit. This difficult request was granted as Elisha fulfilled the parameters set by Elijah; “…if you see me when I am taken from you…” – 2 Kings 2:10 (NIV).
Following to observe Elijah’s departure was a journey for Elisha, as Elijah tested him on numerous occasions to confirm his desire. Elisha followed with due diligence and committment.
Some lessons from Elisha’s journey include:
- God’s time is not our own. Elisha had to be patient and wait to receive that double portion of God’s Spirit.
- Waiting on God can be very frustrating if you become anxious. It is not easy to be in God’s waiting room. However, it is extremely beneficial to the believer as you experience the transformational power in your life, bringing changes in many areas, for example, attitudes, the way you perceive things and many other characteristics of God.
- When God gives instructions, it is important for us to obey immediately.
- God’s promises are ‘yea’ and ‘amen.’ His Word says He will give us the desires of our hearts. The prophet experienced this promise fulfilled in his life.
Be encouraged today and remain focused on God. Stay in His love and fulfil your destiny, just as Elisha did.

God, my Father, thank You for Your love. Help me to love You enough to be obedient to You and fulfill my destiny. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
