Let God Turn On the Light

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” – Psalm 139:23-24 (KJV)

Every house has a corner we avoid. The back of the closet, the space under the sink, the garage shelf nobody has touched in years, etc. We can live comfortably for a long time with the clutter we have simply stopped seeing.

Our hearts work the same way. Resentment, pride, envy, and private habits settle in gradually, and because they arrive slowly, they start to feel normal. Proverbs 21:2 (KJV) says, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.” Thus, we are poor judges of our own cleanliness.

That is why David did not ask God to look at his actions. He asked God to search his heart. He invited the light into the closet – the dark space at the back.

Consider a plumber who is called in to address a small water stain on a ceiling. The stain is not the problem. Behind the wall, a pipe has been leaking for months, and mould has been quietly spreading. Left alone, the stain looks minor. Opened up, the real damage appears. A short temper, a sharp tongue, or a nagging anxiety is often just the ‘stain.’ God wants to show us the pipe that’s behind the symptom.

Note, brethren, this invitation is not to condemn us. Notice how David’s prayer ends: “…lead me in the way everlasting.” God exposes in order to restore, the way a doctor orders a scan to heal and correct, not to shame.

How can we start turning the light on?

  • Set aside five quiet minutes today. Pray Psalm 139:23-24 slowly, then simply listen.
  • Write down whatever comes to mind: a grudge, a half-truth, a secret habit. Do not argue with it yet.
  • Ask one trusted person: “What is one thing you’ve noticed in me that I may not see?” Then receive the answer without defending yourself.

The light of God is being turned on.

Prayer

Lord, I have lived beside shambles for so long that I no longer notice them. Today, I ask that You turn on Your light so that I can see. Show me what is really there, and give me the courage to look and act. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
