Let us Pray, God Answers – Part 1

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coastand that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.– 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV)

Prayer is a direct line of communication with the Almighty God, who hears and answers.

Despite its brevity, Jabez’s account teaches us about the power of prayer and the importance of our names. Jabez’s name was given to him by his mother as a reflection of the pain she experienced while giving birth (1st Chronicles 4:9). Could you imagine every time Jabez’s name was called, he was actually being called pain? But praise be to God, Jabez did not allow his name to define him. He used his faith to overcome his struggles, thus finding a new identity because the prayer-answering God granted his request.

We do not have to live a life of pain and struggles when we can take it to God. Philippians 4:6 tells us to worry about nothing; instead, pray about everything. Jabez prayed about his situation, and God granted him what he requested.

Jabez’s prayer depicts the power of prayer. It shows us that talking to God can transform us and our situations, as well as the power of sincere prayer. We can also garner the following:

  1. Jabez was specific about what he needed from God:
  • He prayed that God would bless him.
  • That God would enlarge his territory.
  • That God’s hand might be with him.
  • That God would keep him from evil.

It should be noted that Jabez prayed honestly to God. God wants us to share our real feelings with Him, to hear our heart’s cry. He already knows what is in our hearts. Be honest!

We must also have faith like Jabez, believing that God will answer our prayers. Let us wait before God. While we are waiting, God is not only working on the situation but also on us. Isaiah 40:31 says, But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength…” (NKJV). It takes faith to wait. Be patient.
