“Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men”
2 Corinthians 3:2 (KJV)
How many times have you heard this saying? “What you do speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying.”
This quotation is commonly attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. It highlights the truth that our actions carry more weight than our words. In other words, people pay more attention to how we live than what we say. We might speak of love, faith, or righteousness, but if our actions contradict those words, then our message loses its power. In a time when people are skeptical of words, our actions become the loudest sermon we’ll ever preach.
Apostle Paul understood this truth well. He told the believers in Corinth that they were like living letters, not written with ink but by the Spirit, known and read by all (2nd Corinthians 3:2-3). In essence, our lifestyle is the gospel many people will see before they ever hear a message from a pulpit. Every act of kindness, every stand for truth, every expression of love – all reveal Christ within us. Are we aware that someone is “reading” our lives today?
As living epistles, we must let the Light of Christ shine in and through us. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works….”(Matthew 5:16 – NKJV). Christ calls us the light of the world. That light is not only our verbal testimony, but our lifestyle. The way we treat others, handle adversity, use our time, and walk in love is a testament of our lives on display for the world to read. Does your life draw others to Christ?
Today, be encouraged and ask the Holy Spirit to help you daily, as “living epistles.” Reflect Christ in words, tone, and conduct. Remember: you may be the only ‘Bible’ someone will ever read. Therefore, let your life speak and “…let your conversation be as it becometh the Gospel of Christ…” – Philippians 1:27 (KJV).
Prayer
Oh Heavenly Father, with grateful hearts, we thank You for the work Your Son Jesus Christ did for us on Calvary. We thank You, Lord, for the Light of the glorious Gospel that brought us into fellowship with You. Let Your Light permeate our lives so that others would see You by our lifestyle and not merely by our words. Let them read Christ and not us. This we pray in Jesus‘ name. Amen.
