“If you love me, keep my commands.” – John 14:15(NIV)
In the early 80s, my family was torn apart by a lack of knowledge: deception and mistrust were the order of the day. I felt so rejected and bitter, as if ‘no one cared’, but thanks to my great-aunt, her love and care led me to Christ.
While processing my pain and sadness, I attended early morning prayer in church, seeking God’s face in desperation. I would ask God, “Why me?” And He began to speak, showing me that when a person risks loving, situations can affect their heart, possibly breaking it. I understood then that I needed to humble myself before God and ask more often for mercy and forgiveness from bitterness and resentment, and with His help, I saw everyone in love. I prayed: ‘If I am the one to make a difference in my family, let it be.’
God began to use me in the church and at home. I always followed His instructions with good and positive behaviour, not how my mind wanted me to feel. Friends: I got my breakthrough for my entire family. God’s tender mercies touched my life, and the Holy Spirit changed the hearts of those closest to me. He can do the same for you! The Bible says that God is love and the source of all love (1st John 4:7-8). I experienced this love.
After Peter had betrayed Jesus, not once, but three times. Jesus said, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15). After experiencing the sting of betrayal and rejection, Jesus spoke to Peter with courage, not fear, selflessness, not desperation. He displayed mercy, not wrath, by confirming His willingness to love even after rejection. The message: ‘do likewise.’ ‘Feed Jesus’ lambs and sheep’ (John 21:15-17). Peter was to demonstrate love even in rejection by loving others and following Jesus’ example. Jesus invited all His disciples to risk loving unconditionally.
Believers, we must learn to trust God through pain. He is able to deliver; only believe.
Prayer
Almighty and loving Father, thank You for Your unconditional love, which encourages us to love others. Mould and fashion us after Your Son, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
